About
The Reflective Room

Hello There! I'm Mathew.
I’m a Cognitive Behavioural Therapist with over 10 years’ experience supporting adults with common mental health difficulties, psychological trauma and the impact of adverse life experiences.
I grew up on the Isle of Man, and I understand the unique challenges of living in a close-knit island community, where life can feel both supportive and, at times, confining. The Reflective Room was created to offer something many people need: a calm, private space where you can slow down, feel safe and be met with warmth and compassion.
My background in Family and Child Psychology, alongside postgraduate training in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, means my work is grounded in science. I draw on developmental psychology to understand how our early experiences shape the way we think, feel and relate. I integrate CBT, ACT, and CFT to offer practical, compassionate ways forward, always guided by what matters most to you.
Above all, I believe the therapeutic relationship is central to meaningful change. Safety, trust, and authenticity help people feel truly seen and understood. Therapy isn’t about fixing you, it’s about understanding yourself, your patterns and learning to meet yourself with greater acceptance and self-kindness.
The Room
The Reflective Room has been intentionally designed to be more than just a space, it’s an essential part of the therapeutic experience.
Soft colours, natural textures, and gentle light create a calming atmosphere that helps you slow down and feel grounded from the moment you step inside.
Surrounded by the peaceful grounds of The Nunnery, the room offers a sense of stillness that allows for deep reflection and emotional clarity.

My Story
I left the Isle of Man at eighteen to study psychology, never imagining how much that decision would shape both my career and who I am.
After completing my undergraduate degree in Psychology and a Master’s in Family and Child Psychology, I worked across the UK with children and adults facing complex emotional and social challenges. Those years showed me just how deeply our early experiences shape us. They also quietly helped me understand myself.
When I returned home at twenty-five to work as an Assistant Clinical Psychologist, I saw firsthand the struggles many people on our island carry, including anxiety, trauma, burnout, and the weight of coping in silence.
I went on to complete my Postgraduate Diploma in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, alongside further training in ACT and CFT, so I could offer therapy that is both evidence-based and meaningful.
Over time, it became clear that many people needed support but didn’t feel comfortable accessing public services, whether because of waiting lists, privacy concerns or wanting something more personal.
That’s why The Reflective Room was created. A space where understanding leads to compassion, and compassion creates the possibility for change.
Professional Background

Qualifications
Master's Degree in Family Child Psychology (MSc)
Certified PGDip in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (University of Chester)
Continuing CPD in 'Third Wave' Therapies
I hold a Master’s degree in Family and Child Psychology, which gives me a strong developmental understanding of how early experiences, relationships and environments shape the way we think, feel, and cope throughout life. This perspective allows therapy to move beyond symptoms alone, helping us gently explore patterns with greater context and compassion.
I am a fully-qualified Cognitive Behavioural Therapist, having completed my Postgraduate Diploma in CBT at the University of Chester. My work is grounded in evidence-based practice, while remaining flexible and responsive to each individual’s needs. My integrative approach allows therapy to be both practical and reflective, supporting meaningful change while fostering self-understanding.

Compassion Focussed Therapy
My therapeutic approach is person-centred and integrative, shaped around your individual needs, experiences and pace. Rather than following a one-size-fits-all model, I draw on a range of evidence-based approaches to support you in a way that feels both structured and compassionate.
A developmental perspective helps us understand how early experiences and relationships have shaped the way you think, feel and cope today. Alongside this, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) offers practical tools to explore patterns of thoughts and behaviours, while Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) supports you in developing psychological flexibility and reconnecting with what matters most. Compassion Focused Therapy (CFT) is woven throughout the work, helping to reduce self-criticism and build a kinder, more supportive relationship with yourself.
Together, these approaches create a safe, thoughtful space for reflection, understanding, and meaningful change, guided by collaboration, warmth and trust.
